Bloodchild Assessment

1.                    Are there any prominent symbols in the story? If so, what are they and how are they used?

The egg is used as a symbol of fertility and life. The egg from the Tlic is used to extend the life of the Terran’s and is used like a drug to relax them for implantation of the Tlic young. Also, the gun which is illegal for Terran’s to have is a symbol of power, war and even freedom. The Tlic have all the power in this society and fear guns, as they know they can overpower them. There is also the relationship between the Terrans and the Tlic, the reversal of what power humans had on earth on animals. Terrans are now on a preserve being put into families for mating and used as symbols of status in Tlic society. Similar to what we do to endangered animals, even though we try to save them they also become symbols of status in our political and social world.

2.    What connections did you make with the story? Discuss the elements with which you were able to connect.                                                                                         Overall I just found the story fascinating for the element of the symbiotic relationship between two intelligent beings. And how the emotional and logical feelings the characters felt in the situation were the driving force of a untied society. Even though it was not completely equal, which is true of most symbiotic relationships, the parasite tends to get more out of the relationship than the host in nature.
3.  What changes would you make to adapt this story into another medium? What medium would you use? What changes would make?

I would adapt this story into comic book form. I would see that the written story would not change, but add imagery of the landscape, give an establishing shot to the audience and maybe some background into the history. Maybe show the dividing social line and difference in architecture, giving hints that the Terrans are caged in. I would give the Terrans simple clothing that was practical and of no fashionable use, but the Tlic would look regal and a bit creepy. Overall I wouldn’t really change much, just add visual detail.
